Position Title: College Success Seminar Instructor

Funding Source: General Fund

Reports to: School Principal

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education, Counseling, English, Social Sciences, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with an appropriate secondary-level (6–12) endorsement, such as:
    • EX – Mathematics (6–12)
    • BA – English (6–12)
    • BX – Language Arts (6–12)
    • RX – Social Studies (6–12)
    • Any valid 6–12 or K–12 endorsement appropriate for high school instruction
  • Previous experience teaching high school students or supporting students in postsecondary readiness is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of college and career readiness standards, executive functioning development, and academic success strategies.
  • Strong understanding of adolescent development, pedagogy, and effective instructional strategies for diverse learners.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, learning management systems, and digital collaboration tools.
  • Commitment to maintaining an inclusive, supportive, and student-centered learning environment.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic educational environment and contribute positively to the culture of Detroit Early Middle College.

Position

Description:

Detroit Early Middle College is seeking a passionate and dedicated High School College Success Seminar Teacher to join our innovative instructional team. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to helping scholars develop the academic, social, and organizational skills needed to succeed in dual enrollment coursework and postsecondary pathways. As a College Success Seminar Teacher, you will guide students through essential concepts such as time management, study strategies, self‑advocacy, financial literacy, career exploration, and the expectations of college‑level learning.

You will play an important role in shaping student readiness for Early Middle College experiences and long‑term academic success.

Physical Requirements: Light Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects; frequent standing, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.

Terms of Employment: Salary & benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. The salary range for certified teachers starts at $51,300. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the School Principal in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver engaging instruction focused on college readiness, study strategies, goal‑setting, self‑management, and academic behaviors aligned with Early Middle College expectations.
  • Guide students in understanding dual enrollment expectations, college‑level rigor, campus resources, and long‑term academic planning.
  • Facilitate lessons that build metacognition, resilience, communication skills, and personal responsibility.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners, including those enrolled in dual credit courses.
  • Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments and adjust instruction as needed.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and communicate academic progress to families when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Early Middle College staff, counselors, and postsecondary partners to ensure alignment with college expectations and support systems.
  • Maintain open communication with parents/guardians regarding expectations, student progress, and upcoming Early Middle College milestones.
  • Actively participate in the teaching and learning cycle, including data review, development of action plans, reteaching, and reflection.
