Position Information

Position Title: Art and Art History-Assistant Professor-Ceramics/3D Design

The Department of Art & Art History invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Studio Art in Ceramics and 3D Design. This is a tenure-track, full-time position (24 workload hours: 18 teaching hours; 6 research/creative activity hours) on a 9‑month contract to begin in August 2026. We are a NASAD accredited, BA‑granting, fine‑arts program in the context of a Christian liberal arts college.

We seek an artist and educator whose practice and teaching engage the expanded field of ceramics and three‑dimensional design. The ideal candidate will have a strong grounding in the history and tradition of ceramics with a global perspective and the ability to connect those foundations to experimental and sculptural approaches. This individual will also guide a vision for an incremental plan of an expansion of 3D design tools and technologies.

Teaching responsibilities: Courses in ceramics and 3D design for Studio Art majors and non‑majors. The department values teaching that combines strong technical instruction with conceptual development, fostering both skill and critical thinking. Additionally, the faculty member will contribute to the college’s general education curriculum, which may include First‑Year Seminars and the department’s senior capstone course on a rotating basis.

College environment: We are committed to fostering an inclusive and conceptually rich studio environment and seek a dynamic artist‑educator who will contribute significantly to our undergraduate curriculum, mentorship, and creative activity. Leadership and service within the department are expected of all tenured and tenure‑track faculty members. Responsibilities include working outside the classroom, advising students, attending departmental events, keeping regular office hours, conducting portfolio reviews, and assessments.

Studio: The Department of Art and Art History features a 3,200‑square‑foot ceramic studio equipped with a slab press, clay and glaze mixing rooms, a Small Skutt electric kiln – 240 volt, 48 amp, 1 phase, 11 520 watts, 6.4 cubic feet; medium Skutt electric kilns – 240 volt, 72 amp, 1 phase, 17 300 watts, 11.6 cubic feet; a Geil natural gas kiln Model DLB‑24, 24 cubic feet, and an outdoor Raku kiln. Studio offices are provided for faculty in the DePree Art Center.

The permanent collection of the Kruizenga Museum includes a global ceramic collection available for teaching and study.

Hope College is located approximately 2.5 driving hours from Detroit and Chicago, with daily train service between Chicago and Holland, and close access to Lake Michigan. The College and Department have opportunities for professional development support and summer research funding.
