Position Summary
The Athletic Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, administration and implementation of a comprehensive athletics program for coaches and students enrolled at local high schools. The position of Athletic Coordinator involves a number of complex tasks, including, but not limited to: sports scheduling, eligibility, transportation, uniforms/equipment purchase/management/inventory, emphasis on community and parental involvement, strong operating knowledge of fiscal responsibilities, ticket sales, game staff, revenue deposits for the schools, field/facilities-readiness, the ability to implement evaluation procedures and develop athletic plans that are consistent with District, state and federal policies and guidelines, support for the theory of action for Detroit Public Schools Community District, and the effective communications techniques that provide clear, timely and accurate information to the schools, parents, District, state and federal agencies and the public.
This position also requires leadership, expertise and management skills to maintain a present home school as well as to collaborate with Athletic Coordinators and Coaches at other schools and the Office of Athletics, to plan, budget, and coordinate effectively with a wide variety of coaches, state, city, governmental agencies, schools, school Districts and with an array of community-based organizations. This requires ongoing contact with District and other officials both within and outside the school system, including contact with school administrators, school‑based staffs and program directors;
District agency personnel, state officials, professional consultants, community leaders, associations/organization leaders and parents. The Athletic Coordinator is expected to represent the schools and the school district at a wide spectrum of school, city, state, and community events focusing on setting high standards of professionalism, honesty and integrity; in the areas of coaching, academic expectations, academic eligibility, athletic performance, professional development, related areas and other activities deemed appropriate by Detroit Public Schools Community District.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Health, Fitness, Athletic training or related fields.
- Master’s degree in Ed Leadership, or Health and Fitness, Athletic Training or related field from an accredited college or university preferred.
- Five (5) years of related education experience, including three (3) years of classroom teaching experience.
- Minimum of 5 years coaching/athletics/sports management/athletic coordinator directors’ experience in an urban school setting and/or in a multicultural education environment.
- Experience managing budgets and personnel required.
Essential Functions
- Oversee all major functions of athletics at local high schools.
- Be available for after school, evenings/weekend practices, events and meets.
- Be punctual and have good attendance.
- Regularly monitor scholar‑athletes academic eligibility performance, attendance, behavior, training and development of their individual athletic ability.
- Supervise all athletics participating coaches in the building.
- Coordinate the sports program in collaboration with the school’s Principal/Administrator/Coaching staff.
- Observe and administer all school and District policies.
- Ensure the organization and seasonal/annual inventory of all equipment.
- Ensure regular programs of practice in and out of season and study table for athletes.
- Submit all administrative materials by the deadline.
- Work closely with the Office of Athletics when scheduling interscholastic contest and officials/umpires.
- Schedule and coordination of coaches’ end of the season/evaluations.
