Summary

The Assistant Head Coach is responsible for helping in developing and coordinating the school's chess program. This includes fostering a supportive and engaging environment where students build critical thinking, problem-solving, and sportsmanship skills through chess. The coach will plan and lead practices, organize competitions, and mentor players at all levels of ability.

• Develop and implement a structured practice schedule that builds students' chess knowledge and skills.
• Teach chess fundamentals, strategies, and tactics in a way that is accessible to varying levels of experience.
• Foster a positive team culture that emphasizes respect, perseverance, and good sportsmanship.
• Prepare students for local, regional, and state tournaments; accompany and supervise students at competitions.
• Monitor academic eligibility and support the balance of athletics, academics, and character development.
• Communicate regularly with parents, teachers, and administrators about schedules, progress, and expectations.
• Maintain chess equipment, materials, and digital resources.
• Serve as a role model and mentor for students, promoting confidence, discipline, and teamwork.

• Strong knowledge of chess rules, strategies, and competitive play.
• Prior coaching, teaching, or mentoring experience preferred.
• Ability to inspire and motivate middle school students.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all players.
