Functional Safety Senior Project Engineer
This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in our office in Northbrook, IL.
Responsibilities- Lead the development, review, or audit/assessment of safety work products for clients seeking compliance to standards in functional safety and related fields (IEC 61508, ISO 13849, IEC/EN 62061, UL991, UL1998, ISO 61511, ISO 21448, UL 4600, IEC 61487, ISO 26262 and other relevant standards).
- Employ established methods and frameworks to lead the engineering development or review of safety cases for complex software‑intensive systems.
- Examples of such systems: self‑driving vehicles, industrial automation systems, battery and energy storage systems in both vehicle and stationary applications, and related systems. Safety analysis methods include FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, safety requirements management, safety concepts such as FSC/TSC work products, system and software architectures, HIL and SIL testing, system integration testing, vehicle integration testing, and system/vehicle validation.
- Lead full training events in topics relevant to functional safety and related fields (ISO 26262, IEC 61508, IEC/EN 62061, ISO 61511, ISO 21448, UL 4600, ISO 13849 and other standards).
- Provide mentorship and thought‑leadership for junior‑level engineering personnel.
- Lead business development activities: defining Statements of Work (SOWs), providing budgetary estimates, and submitting proposals for client‑funded projects.
- Leverage industry experience and network to win projects and build the business.
- Lead client programs, including large‑scale client programs, by interacting regularly with clients in technical program meetings and project reviews.
- Address client concerns and resolve client issues.
- Provide expert technical leadership and guidance to clients regarding functional safety and related technical fields.
- Projects may include regular travel to client sites and other UL locations.
- Provide leadership and technical advice on special projects.
- Offer leadership and expertise on strategic business direction by providing technical and market expertise to management planning and report‑out activities.
- Perform verification reviews or other technical review activities as directed.
- Roles requiring independent expert technical judgment (e.g., PDE, review board chair, Regional Lead Reviewer and similar roles).
- Represent UL at industry‑related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
- Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact, reports and written communication, and interactions with client executive‑level leadership.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast‑paced team environment.
- Lead the development of UL technical standards and other relevant technical standards (ISO, IEC, IEEE, SAE, etc.) by direct participation as member and leader of standards committees.
- Serve in thought‑leadership roles in the technical community, contributing to engineering organizations such as technical standards committees, engineering societies, and related chapters or regional organizations, and issuing technical publications and presentations.
- Integrate continuous improvement and safety culture in all aspects of the job.
- Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and all physical and digital security practices.
- Perform other duties as directed.
- University degree in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Computer Science Engineering or a closely related field.
- Eight or more years of industrial functional safety experience.
- Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the applicable discipline.
- Working knowledge of conformity standards used in the area of expertise.
- Working knowledge of industry issues, needs and problems.
- Demonstrated ability to apply project‑handling concepts in the area of expertise.
The estimated salary range for this position is $120,000–$200,000 and is based on multiple factors, including job‑related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location and other factors.
