Join our Michigan Office and be an integral part of growing our Bridges & Structures Design practice. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, collaborative, proactive, demonstrate sound technical excellence, and focus on delivering high‑quality work. This opportunity entails responsible management of assigned project(s) throughout their full lifecycle, including developing the scope and technical sections of proposal and procurement documents, participating in contract negotiations, and overseeing the delivery of the project plan to accomplish HNTB’s 4‑for‑4 performance—delivery of quality work, on time, on budget, and to the client’s satisfaction on every project.
The position proactively manages budget, schedule, technical requirements, contractual obligations, and client communications in support of the project’s objectives. It provides high‑level technical tasks while managing and reviewing design‑related specifications, calculations, reports, and plans, coordinating with internal and external partners, and addressing design‑related issues or concerns. As a Sr. Project Manager you will manage multi‑disciplinary project team(s) for projects ranging in engineering fees from $1 M to $25 M, or serve in key discipline‑lead roles on projects with fees exceeding $25 M.
You’ll Do
- Develop project scope and fee quotation; assist in preparing technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB’s Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).
- Serve as the primary client liaison and manage the project team to deliver scope, schedule, and budgets to completion and client satisfaction; lead client contract scoping and negotiations.
- Perform technical discipline tasks including analysis, reports, design, specification, and production for assigned projects.
- Implement the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB’s Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA); lead development and execution of the project management plan; supervise and mentor team toward overall project objectives.
- Oversee project staffing, including recruitment, development, retention, succession planning, staffing reports, and performance and compensation reviews.
- Partner with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development, building client relationships, and pursuit efforts for mega and super‑mega projects in accordance with HNTB’s Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Prepare proposal and presentation materials and lead proposal development and interview presentations for strategic, mini‑mega or mega projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 12 years of relevant experience.
- 4 years of successful management of engineering projects.
- Excellent technical knowledge and quality work in multidisciplinary projects, including the ability to consider the impact of design decisions on cost, fabrication, and construction of bridges and other transportation structures.
- Experience with winning, contracting, and successfully delivering 4‑for‑4 (on‑time, on‑budget, quality, client satisfaction) on multi‑disciplinary or large/complex projects; identify and handle risk and change management independently.
- Experience leading large teams including sub‑consultants.
- Proficiency with system tools to manage, monitor, and deliver complex projects.
- Ability to apply an accrued knowledge base to innovate project efficiencies.
- Serve as the lead interface with the client.
- Deploy talent to other projects and develop successors for continued work with the same client.
