The Role

Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) Detroit office is looking for a Resident Engineer (P.E. License required) to join our team. We are a leading engineering firm known for quality, responsiveness, and a proven track record of success as a Prime civil engineering firm
. As a Resident Engineer you will ensure the preparation of accurate and complete work products by monitoring schedules, change orders, and weekly reports; identifying and implementing ideas that save the client time and money; reviewing interim work products/submittals; and providing needed feedback and coordination of sub‑consultants.

Essential Duties/Functions And Responsibilities
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks or assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex technical documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to supervise others and make decisions concerning work in progress.
  • Ability to work independently and perform duties in the construction field office.
  • Assists the Construction Manager in conducting project performance reviews and personal development plan discussions.
  • Coordinates with local utilities and other agencies or private parties affected by the project; prepares project closeout and accepts punch lists and other completion paperwork; participates in contractor claims and prepares or assists in claim documentation.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with common job site conditions and proper procedures for rectification.
  • Develops construction inspection staff through on‑job mentoring and training.
  • Knowledge of construction inspection principles and practices for soils, survey methods, concrete, asphalt, state and local specifications, laws, regulations, and safe work practices.
  • Maintains orderly project files and required logs and records.
  • Maintains knowledge required for satisfactory performance.
  • Makes recommendations for construction change orders, performs constructability reviews, monitors budgets, and reviews invoices before delivery.
  • May perform constructability reviews.
  • Possesses intermediate personal computer skills (email, database, word processing, spreadsheets, graphics).
  • Prepares or oversees all correspondence to contractor and owner, responds to contractor RFI’s, and clarifies plans or specifications.
  • Recommends additional staff and develops relationships with field staff.
  • Responsible for multiple construction projects requiring multiple disciplines.
  • Reviews and approves contractor quantities and monthly progress pay requests; presides over pre‑construction meetings and prepares minutes.
  • Reviews design and bidding documents; evaluates bids; supervises progress and scheduling.
  • Reviews submittals, sends them for technical review, and prepares transmittal letters accepting or rejecting.
  • Detects discrepancies in plans, materials, and methods and implements corrective action.
  • Plans and schedules inspection activities.
  • Supervises field staff and manages contractors with responsibility for quality construction.
  • Takes and maintains dated photographs of construction progress; maintains frequent communication with owner or point of contact.
  • Uses initiative, exercises independent judgment, draws valid conclusions, and meets deadlines.
To Be Successful

You will bring your A‑game daily and provide leadership, collaboration, and a dynamic environment for your team. To be successful you should have:

  • Minimum 15 years of experience as a Resident Engineer.
  • Minimum 5 years of highway and bridge construction experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • PE License in Michigan required.
  • Erosion and Sediment Control Training Course preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record for the past 3 years.
