Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit (Senior Manager)

The Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit is responsible for advising clients on tax implications of their business objectives, overseeing alternative actions to lessen tax burden, and serving as the primary client contact for complex nonprofit tax issues. The role applies knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption, and unrelated business income issues, communicates risks, and makes decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies.

The Senior Manager is a critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team and actively participates in marketing and networking, maintaining client relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure client compliance with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens;
  • Conduct reviews of T/Rs and resolve all tax issues with clients, involving specialists where appropriate;
  • Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with clients and/or partners;
  • Review Forms 990, 990-PF, and 990‑T work papers and disclosures for audited financial statements;
  • Plan and review the tax process, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement process, billing, collection of A/R, managing client relationships, and providing timely advice;
  • Research complex issues, frame them clearly, and report findings concisely;
  • Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits;
  • Serve as a technical resource to peers within the region and manage inquiries from federal and state agencies;
  • Introduce and develop new ideas to improve client and firm positions, review studies, offer alternative courses of action, and research and implement nonprofit tax strategies;
  • Supervise RISE Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers on all projects, review their work, provide training on software and research skills, and offer performance feedback;
  • Act as a career advisor and manage workload of team members.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience;
  • Supervisory experience;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics OR a Bachelor’s degree in any other field with a CPA certification;
  • Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation preferred;
  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) required;
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred;
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to delegate work effectively;
  • Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, and decision‑making skills;
  • Teamwork ability;
  • Ability to develop and manage a team of tax professionals;
  • Ability to compose written tax advice;
  • Executive presence and ability to act as the primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.

Illinois: $140,000 - $190,000
Minnesota: $130,000 - $190,000
