LOCATION: Samaritan Center - 5555 Conner St, Detroit, MI 48213 (East)

REPORTS TO: Program Services Manager

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt/Hourly

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time Regular

Job Summary

The Financial Coach will provide low-to-moderate income eligible families in the SER Center for Working Families with financial advice/coaching that will contribute to the financial stability and asset-building capabilities of each family, with a focus on justice-involved individuals and at-risk youth.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Facilitates financial education workshops such as money management, credit, banking, mortgage loans, buying a home, and avoiding predatory lenders.
  • Conducts intake for participants seeking financial counseling assistance.
  • Conducts individual counseling on topics such as credit and debt management, savings, budgeting, special assistance programs for home ownership, foreclosure intervention, and other topics as appropriate.
  • Assists the participant in developing a personal financial plan to meet their financial goals.
  • Exposes participants to financial products and services such as check cashing alternatives, flexible financial products and affordable housing products.
  • Assists the participant in devising a debt liquidation plan that includes payoff priorities and timelines.
  • Provides information on Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) and assists with the application process.
  • Maintains follow-up contact with participants on matters discussed in counseling sessions.
  • Refers participant to community or financial agencies to obtain services outlined in the financial plan.
  • Creates and maintains partnerships with financial institutions, real estate agencies, lending institutions, financial industry professionals, and community-based organizations.
  • Maintains program database, including data collection, input, and program reporting.
  • Represents the organization in various community forums and conducts program presentations.
  • Performs other duties that will contribute to the program’s team effort.

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance or other related field.
  • Two to four years of related experience in personal financial education, homebuyer education, and/or foreclosure intervention counseling preferred.
  • Bilingual language skills in English/Spanish or English/Arabic are preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with staff, participants, and partner agencies.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse groups, showing empathy and respect.
  • Efficiently manage multiple tasks, maintain detailed records, and ensure compliance with policies.
  • Mental ability to handle pressures related to dealing with multiple individuals from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of need.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License. Incumbent must have a reliable means of transportation.
Physical Demands

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time, and have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard, and other office equipment.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 10 pounds.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This job operates in a normal office environment with a noise level, which is at times, moderately loud with little discomfort due to noise, dirt, dust and the like. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
