Accountant Special Projects – Senior Specialist

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Accountant Special Projects – Senior Specialist. This role reports to the Assistant Vice President and Controller, Fiscal Operations.
Pay RangeBase pay: $59,000.00/yr – $59,000.00/yr
Salary minimum: $59,000
;
Salary hire maximum: $68,000
Oversee recording and verification of financial data in accordance with university policies; identify and resolve discrepancies; perform financial review and analysis; prepare accurate and timely reports; provide project oversight; manage significant and complex assignments; play key role in general accounting operations including fiscal closing activities.
Essential Functions- Oversee recording and verification of financial data; identify and resolve discrepancies.
- Perform financial review and analysis and prepare accurate reports.
- Provide project oversight and review related work directed to accounting staff.
- Manage significant and complex assignments with minimal supervision.
- Play role in overall operations of General Accounting including fiscal closing activities.
- Assist in the planning and coordination of year‑end close; serve as liaison to external auditors.
- Oversee internal and external financial reporting requirements; compile and analyze financial information.
- Manage workflow, coordinate and review tasks of lower‑level accounting and support staff.
- Assist in the development and enhancement of accounting policies and procedures.
- Participate in computer system testing and development.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Reports to:
Vice President/AVP/Dean. - Supervisory accountability:
Supervises professionals, non‑managers. - Customer accountability:
Interfaces with regulatory authorities. - Freedom to act:
Subject to general input from supervisor.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field from an accredited institution. - Experience:
3-4 years of related accounting experience in a large, complex operation. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, primarily Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
- Extensive experience using Banner Administrative Systems preferred.
- Knowledge of GAAP with emphasis on fund accounting and GASB implementations.
- Understanding of university policies and procedures in a complex environment.
- Analytical skills – ability to evaluate information accurately and detail‑oriented.
- Learning agility – self‑starter who learns rapidly and adapts to change.
- Teamwork – collaborate effectively with colleagues and support teammates.
- Technology skills – proficient with Banner or comparable finance management systems.
- Communication – clear, concise, professional oral and written communication.
- Supervisory – ability to train, coach, and supervise staff.
- Leadership – lead and influence staff; make sound judgments.
