SummaryThe Controller is a senior financial leader responsible for directing and overseeing all accounting and financial reporting functions for the healthcare system. This role ensures financial integrity, regulatory compliance, accurate reporting, and effective internal controls. The Controller collaborates closely with executive leadership and operational leaders to support strategic financial decisions, enhance operational performance, and sustain long-term organizational financial health. The Controller reports to the Vice President of Finance and supervises the Finance Leadership Team.
Job DescriptionJob-Specific Duties1. Financial Management and Reporting
- Oversee preparation of timely, accurate monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and healthcare regulatory standards.
- Manage financial consolidation across the hospital, physician groups, and joint ventures.
- Provide variance analysis, operational insights, and decision-support reporting to leadership.
- Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, grants, and fixed assets for all entities including Mercy Medical Center Foundation.
- Maintain a comprehensive chart of accounts tailored to healthcare service lines and departments.
- Lead efficient month-end and year-end close processes.
- Ensure accurate accounting for Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payors, risk-based contracts, and value-based payment arrangements.
- Ensure account reconciliations are regularly reviewed.
- Report any significant questions or concerns to the VP of Finance, CFO and/or CEO in a timely manner.
- Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with federal and state healthcare regulations.
- Lead annual external audits, cost reports, internal audits, and related financial compliance reviews.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements including CMS, IRS, OIG, GAAP, and state health department guidelines.
- Support development and execution of annual operating and capital budgets.
- Create financial models, projections, and scenario analyses for service lines and strategic initiatives.
- Partner with operational leaders to identify financial opportunities, inefficiencies, and risks.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team.
- Establish performance expectations and provide coaching, training, and development opportunities.
- Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and transparency across financial operations.
- Oversee financial systems and ERP platforms and ensure optimized use and data integrity.
- Identify process automation and workflow improvement opportunities.
- Serve as a key stakeholder for system implementations, upgrades, and integrations impacting financial reporting.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required.
- Master’s degree in business administration, healthcare administration, or finance preferred.
- CPA strongly preferred.
- CHFP or HFMA certification highly desirable.
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience, ideally within a healthcare environment.
- 2 years of public accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of hospital and clinic revenue cycle operations and reimbursement methodologies.
- Experience with healthcare ERP systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Workday, Lawson/Infor, Oracle) preferred.
