Director of Engineering
Sage Hospitality Group is inviting applications for a Director of Engineering to lead the engineering division at the luxury Shinola Hotel in downtown Detroit.
Job OverviewDevelop, implement, and manage emergency programs for the operation and maintenance of all equipment and physical structures and landscaping in compliance with corporate, franchise, local, state, and national codes and regulations. Oversee short‑ and long‑term planning and day‑to‑day operations of the engineering division, recommend the department’s budget, capital expenditures, and manage expenses within approved constraints. Participate in total hotel management as a member of the hotel Executive Committee.
Responsibilities- Supervise Human Resources in the division to attract, retain, and motivate staff; hire, train, develop, empower, coach, counsel, conduct performance and salary reviews, resolve problems, provide open communication, discipline, and terminate staff as appropriate.
- Develop, recommend, implement, and manage the department’s budget, capital expenditure plan, forecasts, and objectives in line with maintaining a first‑class property.
- Develop, implement, and manage a maintenance program and negotiate maintenance contracts for the hotel, grounds, and all equipment in compliance with corporate and franchise standards and codes to ensure safety, convenience, and guest satisfaction.
- Develop, implement, and direct all emergency programs; ensure all equipment is maintained, conduct inspections and drills, ensure code compliance, train employees, and keep accurate records for a safe environment.
- Develop, implement, and manage energy conservation programs to minimize expenses.
- Coordinate renovation bidding, define costs and scope, and oversee general and specialty contractors to ensure high quality workmanship at minimal cost.
Education/Formal Training
More than two years of post‑high school education.
Experience
Four to five years of employment in a related position with this company or another organization.
Knowledge/Skills
- Advanced knowledge of building management/engineering; integration and communication with other major hotel areas.
- Advanced knowledge of building management/engineering and housekeeping operations.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of major hotel areas including plumbing, refrigeration, air conditioning, electrical systems, boilers, bathroom fixtures and tiling, painting, basic carpentry, and groundskeeping.
- Ability to analyze activities involving original data manipulation or interpretation to draw logical conclusions.
- Excellent comprehension and literacy for procedures, reports, budgets, and instructions.
Abundant communication with management and staff, frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying of weights up to 25 lbs.; frequent bending and kneeling for repairs; general mobility across all floors; use of ladders and lifts; continuous standing; climbing stairs up to 210 steps 5% of each day; occasional driving up to 20 miles.
Work inside 95% of the week; outside 5% of the week. Abnormal temperatures (e.g., walk‑in freezers below 32 °F) 1% of the time.
