Job Description

The fitter fabricator sets up and lays out steel components from blueprints in a production shop environment. This role cuts and fabricates steel as needed and performs MIG tack welding to prepare assemblies for final welding, ensuring structural accuracy and high-quality workmanship.

• Interpret and read drawings and blueprints to determine layout, dimensions, and specifications for steel components.

• Lay out steel parts in a production or steel shop environment according to print and project requirements.

• Cut and fabricate steel pieces to size and shape using appropriate shop tools and equipment.

• Fit and assemble structural and stainless steel components to ensure proper alignment and fit-up.

• Perform MIG welding and tack welding on stainless steel and structural steel to prepare assemblies for final welds.

• Inspect completed layouts and fits to verify accuracy against drawings and blueprints.

• Work collaboratively within a large weld shop to support production schedules and upcoming project demands.

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in the steel and weld shop.

• At least 2 years of experience fitting and fabricating steel pieces in a steel or production facility.

• At least 2 years of MIG welding experience on stainless steel.

• At least 2 years of experience reading drawings or blueprints and laying out parts according to print.

• Proficiency in steel fabrication, including cutting, fitting, and structural layout.

• Ability to perform MIG welding on structural steel and stainless steel.

• Strong blueprint and drawing interpretation skills for accurate layout and fitting.

• Solid understanding of structural steel components and fabrication processes.

• Ability to work accurately with layout tools and measuring equipment in a steel shop environment.

• Previous layout experience in a steel environment.

• Experience working in a large production or weld shop.

• Familiarity with structural steel and stainless steel fabrication techniques.

• Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate work.

• Ability to collaborate with shop personnel and adapt to changing project priorities.

The role is based in a steel shop within a large production facility that includes a dedicated weld shop. You will work around structural and stainless steel, fabrication equipment, and MIG welding stations in a busy, hands‑on environment. The setting is industrial and shop-based, with a focus on safe, efficient steel fabrication and welding operations.

This is a Contract position based out of Detroit, MI.

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
