The Wayne State University Ameri Corps Urban Safety (AMUS) Program is a public health and public safety initiative that engages Ameri Corps members in direct service to strengthen Detroit neighborhoods and improve the health, safety, and well-being of residents.
AMUS members serve in communities throughout Detroit, working alongside residents, law enforcement, community organizations, businesses, and other partners to address neighborhood conditions that affect public safety and community health. Members conduct door-to-door outreach, provide residents with safety and health education, support crime-prevention initiatives, participate in community events, conduct neighborhood and home safety activities, and connect residents with available resources and services.
Members may support initiatives addressing violence prevention, auto theft prevention, environmental health and safety, lead exposure prevention, senior safety, and other emerging community needs. Service also includes identifying neighborhood concerns, distributing educational and safety materials, assisting with community assessments and data collection, and encouraging residents to become actively involved in improving their neighborhoods.
Through hands-on service, AMUS members gain experience in public health, public safety, community engagement, outreach, data collection, and community problem-solving while developing leadership and professional skills.
AMUS provides members with the opportunity to make a measurable difference while helping create safer, healthier, and more connected Detroit communities.
