The supervisor serves as a liaison on a designated shift, functioning as a resource person for management and staff. Provides on‑site problem solving for management and administrative staff, facilitates decision‑making regarding nursing practice, and assists in the development of policies and procedures. Participates in the education and development of patient care staff, and demonstrates commitment to continuous improvement, teamwork, and the mission, vision, and values of DMC.
Monitors activities for compliance with laws, government regulations, JCAHO requirements, and DMC policies, and implements audit recommendations. Ensures diversity objectives for suppliers are met.
Responsibilities- Acts as administrative liaison on off shifts, weekends, and holidays, making decisions about staff and patient placement as needed.
- Collaborates with other health‑care disciplines to provide optimal patient care and facilitates delivery of patient services on all shifts and weekends.
- Uses six leadership actions and adheres to the DMC's Customer Service Standards.
- Interprets and facilitates implementation of hospital and nursing policy/procedure.
- Participates in staff development, collaborating with nursing education and research, clinical nurse specialists, and unit management teams to provide educational programs.
- Conducts rounds on patient care areas and evaluates progress toward patient outcomes.
- Adjusts staffing in collaboration with unit management or charge nurses, considering patient population and skill mix.
- Monitors staff interactions with patients, families, and the public.
- Responds to emergencies and collaborates with unit staff to ensure adequate staffing during emergencies.
- Assists with orientation and training of staff, and serves as a mentor to new staff.
- Collaborates with management and staff to meet unit goals.
- Initiates disciplinary action when indicated and communicates relevant information to the manager.
- Serves on committees and participates in organizational activities as appropriate.
- Participates in performance improvement activities, including data collection.
- Shares joint accountability with the institution for maintaining competency.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing or enrollment/documented intent to complete BSN within two years; or, eight or more years of current equivalent clinical experience.
- More than two years of progressively more responsible nursing experience. Management experience preferred.
- Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Michigan.
- Analytical ability and clinical knowledge to recommend departmental policies, goals, budgets, and staffing needs.
- Ability to adjust work practices and priorities in response to changing conditions.
- Ability to work productively and effectively in a complex environment, handle multiple priorities, and manage stress associated with patient care.
- Adaptability to technologies used in the work environment.
- Interpersonal skills to establish effective communication and leadership for departmental personnel, and to maintain productive relationships with other departments, medical staff, and the community.
- Leadership and educational skills to assist in meeting staff needs in accordance with departmental goals and objectives.
- Willingness to make a meaningful contribution to the work environment, evidenced through behavior and attitude.
- Specialized clinical knowledge and analytical ability to accurately facilitate patient care.
