Bird / Insect Zoology Technician – Professional Aide
Minnesota Natural Features Inventory (MNFI), a program of Michigan State University Extension, is hiring seasonal field technicians to assist with several research, monitoring, and inventory projects focused on rare birds and insect species across Michigan, including secretive marsh birds, waterbirds, shorebirds, songbirds, butterflies, bumble bees, and other insects. We are seeking applicants for flexible start dates (March–May) and end dates (August–October).
Successful applicants will work throughout Michigan on a variety of projects with our team of zoologists.
Field technicians will be hired to conduct field work in support of MNFI research, monitoring, and inventory projects. The work requires long hours, flexible schedules, and the willingness to work in adverse conditions such as hot and humid weather, long and difficult hikes in wetlands, and exposure to biting insects. Fieldwork is conducted in remote places with no trail access and may involve week‑long backpacking assignments.
Technicians will work closely with principal investigators to plan field activities, conduct surveys, and ensure accurate data collection.
- Evaluate potential sampling sites for suitability.
- Conduct surveys for rare animal species, including wetland‑dependent birds and butterflies.
- Sample vegetation and habitat characteristics.
- Clean and maintain field equipment.
- Process specimens and run quality checks in the field or office.
- Enter and compile data in electronic databases and spreadsheets.
- Plan field activities in coordination with principal investigators.
- Ensure accurate data collection and proper documentation of field observations.
- Assist with surveys for rare insects as project needs dictate.
- Travel to study sites throughout Michigan, including overnight stays in hotels or campgrounds for up to a week at a time.
- Work during some holidays and/or weekends as required.
- Knowledge of and ability to identify bird and insect species of Michigan.
- Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in remote areas.
- Adaptability and problem‑solving skills.
- Experience conducting bird and/or insect surveys; ability to identify species by sight.
- Familiarity with Michigan and/or Midwestern ecosystems and common plants.
- Comfortable using watercraft (kayaks, canoes, small boats).
- Navigation skills in the field via map, compass, and GPS.
- Established network of constituents and community members across diverse backgrounds.
- Understanding and implementation of Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.
- Combination of education and specific, relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 25 lbs.
- Sensitivity, knowledge, and appropriate approaches respecting social, cultural, and economic diversity.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Travel within local communities and occasional long‑distance travel required.
- Transportation responsibility of the employee.
- Proficiency in technology tools (web research, Zoom, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
