Technical Aide

Position Summary

The Haddad Lab, in partnership with the John Ball Zoo and various conservation groups, is hiring up to four research technicians to assist with conservation and research activities for three endangered butterfly species: the Poweshiek Skipperling
, Mitchell’s Satyr
, and Karner Blue
. This temporary/on‑call position lasts from mid‑May to mid‑August with flexible start/end dates, and requires a flexible schedule that may include early mornings, late evenings, and weekend work.

• Assist with ex‑situ activities at John Ball Zoo, including greenhouse tasks such as adult collection, captive rearing, breeding, egg collecting, host‑plant maintenance, data collection, and other husbandry or research activities.
• Perform field work, including population monitoring and releases of adult butterflies.
• Maintain accurate records and notes, and maintain a positive attitude while working outdoors in direct sun, high temperatures, and humid conditions.
• Work flexible hours that may involve early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
• Comfortable working in areas where ticks, mosquitoes, and venomous snakes can be present.

• Ability to work long hours outdoors in direct sun, high temperatures, and humid conditions while maintaining accurate notes.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Previous field work experience, especially with butterflies, is beneficial.
• Must be working toward or hold a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, conservation, or a related field.
