Job Summary / Responsibilities

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, provides protection to hospital, patients, visitors, employees and their property. Performs duties where possessing a firearm is deemed necessary.

  • Presents a visible security presence to prevent criminal opportunities, performs patrols of assigned area, maintains awareness of the environment and addresses potential security risks.
  • Performs duties in which possessing a firearm is required such as armed escorts/transports, bank escorts, and mobile patrols.
  • Assists patients, guests, and staff by providing general information; provides access control by checking badges and identification of persons entering the hospital.
  • Performs public service duties as needed (e.g., escorts, assists with locks, opens or locks doors, provides battery boosts); assists with restraints and lifting of patients when required.
  • Investigates complaints regarding parking, safety, and security matters; prepares reports documenting events, investigations, crimes, lost or found property, safety hazards, repair requests, and the like.
  • Patrols parking lots and decks to maintain security; ensures compliance with parking regulations and observes hazardous conditions; directs traffic on hospital premises as required.
  • Monitors security and fire equipment such as alarms, cameras, and control gates; answers telephones and provides information to the public and hospital staff.
  • Engages in additional education and training in criminal law, first aid, defensive tactics, and other relevant topics.
  • Assists in releasing bodies from the morgue.
  • Responds to emergency codes in accordance with hospital and security department policies.
  • Promotes the values of DMC by demonstrating behaviors supportive of quality, community welfare, respect, teamwork, communication, innovation, and efficient resource use.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years experience in public law enforcement, military police, or armed hospital security.
  • Minimum of two years college coursework in criminal justice, security administration, or a related program, and three (3) years experience in a similar field.
  • Completion of State of Michigan MCOLES certified police academy and three (3) years experience in the field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, security administration, or related area with participation in security or law‑enforcement activities such as a police reserve program.
  • Valid State of Michigan driver’s license; eligible for coverage as a driver of DMC vehicles.
  • Successful completion of Public Act 330 certification program.
  • Concealed Weapons Permit (required for firearms).

Facility Description

Children’s Hospital of Michigan is an international leader in pediatric and adolescent medicine. Its surgical services include general, thoracic, reconstructive, and cardiovascular procedures. The hospital’s imaging technology is specifically designed for children and includes advanced diagnostic services such as PET and MRI. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Emergency Department is a verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and dedicated pediatric burn center.
