- Present a visible security presence to prevent criminal opportunity; perform patrols of assigned area; maintain awareness and observe potential security risks.
- Assist patients, guests, and staff by providing general information; provide access control by checking badges and identification of persons entering the hospital.
- Perform public service duties as needed (e.g., escort patients, guests or employees; assist persons locked out of vehicles or rooms; open or lock doors; provide battery boosts); assist with restraints and lifting of patients as needed.
- Investigate complaints regarding parking, safety, and security matters; prepare reports documenting significant events and investigations.
- May patrol parking lots and decks to maintain security; ensure compliance with parking regulations and observe hazardous conditions; may direct traffic on hospital premises as required.
- Monitor security and fire equipment (alarms, cameras, control gates); answer telephones and provide information to public and hospital staff as needed.
- Engage in opportunities for additional education and training in criminal law, first aid, defensive tactics and other relevant topics.
- Assist in releasing bodies from morgue.
- Respond to Emergency Codes in accordance with hospital policies.
- Promote the values of the DMC by demonstrating supportive behaviors and commitment to quality and community welfare.
- High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years experience in security and/or public law enforcement or military police.
- Minimum of two years college coursework in criminal justice, security administration or related program and three (3) years experience in security and/or public law enforcement or military police.
- Completion of State of Michigan MCOLES certified police academy and three (3) years experience in security and/or public law enforcement or military police.
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, security administration or related area with participation in security or law enforcement through an internship or volunteer work such as police reserve program.
- Valid State of Michigan driver's license; must be eligible for coverage as a driver of DMC vehicles by the DMC's insurance carrier.
- Academic ability to meet state certification requirements under Public Act 330 and all standards established by Michigan State Police and the Detroit Medical Center for Act 330 certification.
- Interpersonal skills, self confidence and physical conditioning necessary to confront and control potentially hostile persons with minimum risks of personal injury or disruption to hospital operation.
- Analytical and observational ability to recognize suspicious behavior, criminal activity and potential safety hazards.
- Verbal and written communication skills to compose complete, coherent and concise reports of events and investigations.
