Job Summary / Responsibilities

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, provides protection to hospital, patients, visitors, employees and their property. Performs duties where possessing a firearm is deemed necessary.

  • Presents a visible security presence to deter criminal activity. Performs patrols of the assigned area, maintains awareness of the environment, identifies potential security risks, and takes appropriate action to prevent or suppress activity that violates hospital rules or poses safety hazards.
  • Performs duties where possessing a firearm is deemed necessary, such as armed escorts/transports, bank escorts, or mobile patrols.
  • Assists patients, guests and staff by providing general information. Controls access by checking badges and identification to prevent entry of unauthorized persons. Checks packages entering or leaving the hospital.
  • Performs public service duties as needed (escorts, door control, assistance to those locked out of vehicles or rooms, battery boosts). Assists with restraints and lifting of patients as needed.
  • Investigates complaints regarding parking, safety, security matters, disorderly or suspicious persons. Prepares reports documenting significant events and investigations, crimes, lost or found property, safety hazards, and repair requests.
  • Patrols parking areas to maintain security. Ensures compliance with parking regulations and observes hazardous conditions. Directs traffic on hospital premises as required.
  • Monitors security and fire equipment (alarms, cameras, control gates). Answers telephones and provides information to the public and hospital staff as needed.
  • Engages in opportunities for additional education and training in criminal law, first aid, defensive tactics and other security-related topics.
  • Assists in releasing bodies from morgue as needed.
  • Responds to Emergency Codes in accordance with Hospital and Security Department policies.
  • Promotes the values of the DMC by demonstrating behaviors aligned with quality, community welfare, respect and involvement, teamwork, communication, innovation and education, and efficient use of resources.
  • Qualifications

    1. High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years experience in public law enforcement, military police or armed hospital security, OR

    2. Minimum of two years college coursework in criminal justice, security administration or related program, and three (3) years experience in public law enforcement, military police or armed hospital security, OR

    3. Completion of State of Michigan MCOLES certified police academy and three (3) years experience in public law enforcement, military police or armed hospital security, OR

    4. Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, security administration or related area with participation in security or law enforcement through an internship or volunteer work (e.g., police reserve program).
