GENERAL

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for greeting and engaging Detroit At Work participants via on-site and off-site events, executing intakes, and providing resources/referrals to Detroit At Work Career Centers; additionally, this individual is involve in neighborhood outreach and entering program data for analysis as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field preferred.

Other:

  • One to two years experience engaging disadvantaged adults in career or personal/family development.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to communicate with participants, public and staff.
  • Experience working with community partners.
  • Experience with Computers, Windows, Office 365 programs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide orientation to services and resources available in center and mobile unit.
  • Engage customers in career coaching activities.
  • Advocate for, link customers to community services, and assist in assessing available support services.
  • Schedule and market in-house and partner training/workshop opportunities.
  • Make routine contact with community human service organizations to verify services and eligibility requirements.
  • Provide individual coaching to assist customers in mitigating identified barriers.
  • Follow-up with customers and community human service organizations to ensure that customers are getting their need met.
  • Provide updates to career coaches regarding the status of barrier resolution.
  • Maintain an awareness of local labor market information and refer customers to job leads or to other staff with job leads.
  • Contact customers to verify employment via phone/text/email/postcards.
  • Maintain and provide reports tracking customer information, attendance and activity to ensure necessary services are received in accordance with funding source requirements.
  • Maintain communications as required to coordinate services.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental conditions:

  • Moderate noise (i.e., business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic).
  • Ability to work in a confined area.
  • Ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period.

Physical requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, sit; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard, reach, stoop, kneel to install computer equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
  • Light to moderate lifting in required.
