Role summary:
The General Superintendent will develop and execute the project plan and oversee all aspects of assigned projects with significant complexity. This position will be responsible for managing the team, planning all construction sequencing and meeting project goals. All activities will be performed in support of the strategy, vision and values of JE Dunn.
- Lead all aspects of the project’s safety culture and create awareness by demonstrating a commitment to an injury-free environment through individual actions and mentoring others. Investigate safety incidents and retrain staff as needed.
- Provide management of subcontractors and organization of the overall job and workflow.
- Manage and oversee company staff, subcontractors, suppliers and programs such as Safety, Quality and EEO for a small project or a major portion of a larger project.
- Develop work plans for subcontractors and self-performed work.
- Coordinate and manage the care, custody and control of the project site.
- Lead meetings including daily standups and weekly trade meetings.
- Attend, manage and participate in appropriate progress and/or project OAC meetings.
- Create, manage, change and implement the project’s schedule, in conjunction with the Project Manager.
- Track and monitor project budget and costs using the project management system’s cost reports and data from the project manager.
- Communicate key project information to owners, design team, governing authorities, subcontractors, suppliers and other departments.
- Maintain project filing and documentation; update drawings, logs, diaries and inspection notebooks.
- Approve and/or record unit cost information for weekly reports and complete daily reports, logs and tracking reports.
- Evaluate progress on self-perform work and adjust as needed.
- Manage material and equipment needs for the project.
- Support procurement and approval processes (MOC and DLSC).
- Assist in selecting formwork, tools and equipment for self-perform operations.
- Manage timecard approval to ensure accurate hours and proper cost codes.
- Ensure quality compliance through specifications, QA/QC and external resources.
- Support project closeouts by supervising pre-punch activities and coordinating with owner, architect and authorities.
- Understand the project pursuit process and methodology.
- Collaborate with field leadership to establish field staffing and to identify schedule and cost changes; participate in project buyout meetings and project reviews.
- Understand and apply terms of owner and subcontractor contracts.
- Identify and recruit top talent; promote a culture of diversity and inclusion in JE Dunn.
- Manage the largest, most complex stand-alone and/or multiple complex projects from initial planning to completion.
- Provide management and/or oversight to multiple projects and project teams.
- Contribute to company and regional strategic initiatives; participate in development of training content.
- Deliver leadership messages to multiple audiences internally and externally.
- Accurate, timely work with attention to detail.
- Verbal and written communication skills (Advanced).
- Effective presentation skills (Advanced).
- MS Office proficiency (Intermediate).
- Fundamentals of construction management and project processes knowledge.
- Ability to build relationships within a project team; strong collaboration.
- Project management and accounting software proficiency (Intermediate).
- JE Dunn construction technology proficiency (Advanced).
- Scheduling software proficiency (Intermediate).
- Lean process knowledge (Intermediate).
- Trade knowledge and self-perform/work productivity knowledge (Advanced).
- Budget management, profitability focus and ability to generate future work through relationships (Advanced).
- Understanding of document changes and impact on schedule; layout and crane/rigging knowledge as applicable.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering or related field (Preferred); equivalent relevant experience considered.
