Overview
Join the Biologist I Wildlife Resource Section at the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. This role supports the conservation, management, and public enjoyment of wildlife resources across southwest North Dakota.
Responsibilities- Assist the District Wildlife Resource Supervisor with development and management of District Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) such as tree plantings, herbaceous cover, food plots, noxious weed control, prescribed burning, fence construction, water level management, and sign installation.
- Coordinate and respond to wildlife depredation and collaborate with wildlife technicians on game surveys, including aerial surveys.
- Support the Private Lands Section in delivering private land habitat and access components of the Department’s Private Land Initiative (PLI).
- Supervise seasonal employees and assist with supervision of wildlife technicians.
- Perform daily administrative duties and maintain federal aid workplans, annual management plans, and lease agreements.
- Provide educational services and technical assistance on wildlife management based on sound biological principles.
- Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, or a closely related natural resource science degree.
- One year of professional work experience with a wildlife or natural resource management agency; a Master’s degree can substitute for one year of experience.
- Working knowledge of wildlife management concepts, habitat requirements for Northern Great Plains wildlife, federal and state agricultural conservation programs, and production agriculture.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, high responsibility, strong organization, and attention to detail.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Ability to operate farm equipment, grass drills, trucks/trailers, ATVs/UTVs, and other equipment.
- Valid driver’s license, ability to lift at least 50 pounds, and willingness to travel.
- Satisfactory completion of a background check.
- Knowledge and experience in wildlife depredation programs.
- Knowledge and experience in noxious and invasive weed control and use of sprayers.
- Experience using fire pumpers and towing trailers with heavy equipment.
- Experience operating and maintaining UTV/ATVs.
- Experience in geographic information systems (GIS).
- Experience in wildlife surveys and/or aerial surveys using low-flying aircraft.
- Active participation in hunting and fishing.
