Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean‑up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

About

The Role

We are looking for a Radiological Protection Assistant to support radiological safety across the Harwell and Winfrith sites, ensuring compliance with Radiological Safety Rules and Company Standards. This role is ideal for someone who is technically skilled, safety‑focused, has experienced radiological protection background, and keen to develop in a regulated environment.

You will be assisting the radiological protection professionals in the delivery of the site radiological protection programme, ensuring that the site remains compliant with the requirements of the Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR), Radiological Safety Rules, Company Standards, and the Environmental Permitting Regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the research, development and implementation of new radiological protection practices and procedures and introduction of new equipment and instruments.
  • Prepare and/or review written documentation, including routine and technical reports, radiological risk assessments, work specifications, minor work order cards, designated work documents, and other radiological protection documents as required. Documents must be approved in accordance with site procedures if outside the post holder’s authorisation.
  • Undertake radiological inspections and audits to ensure the effective implementation of the site radiological protection programme.
  • Review the results of routine and non‑routine radiological surveys and other radiological protection programme assessments, informing the Radiation Protection Adviser if any anomalies or non‑conformities are identified.
  • Deliver routine, non‑routine, or detailed technical radiological surveys, liaising with the Radiological Protection Team Leader as required, and provide technical support to others performing similar duties.
  • Undertake the control and supervision of radiological team personnel in the absence of the Radiological Protection Team leader if within the scope of their experience and competence.
  • Conduct simple and detailed radiological investigations under the advice of a Radiation Protection Adviser.
  • Support the personal and professional development and training of staff to ensure an effective and suitably qualified and experienced function.
  • Act or provide advice as necessary to maintain radiological standards and improve performance.
  • Provide operational advice, support, and guidance on radiological issues across the sites.
  • Participate in the Site Emergency Scheme.
  • Comply with the Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality policies, procedures, work instructions and risk assessments and support continuous improvement in these areas.
