About UsDiamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.
At Diamond we are currently undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.
About the RoleWe now have an opportunity for a Mechanical Services Technician to join the Diamond Technical Team. The role will be responsible for providing mechanical support for the Diamond Mechanical Infrastructure within the Installation Facilities Management Group.
Responsibilities- Carrying out installation and assembly of a range of mechanical components and pipework systems both on site and within workshop type environments, including testing and commissioning.
- Participating in the construction, testing, and commissioning of building services and distribution systems.
- Assisting with the operation and maintenance of the building services plant and distribution systems.
- Undertaking problem solving and fault diagnosis on mechanical building services including process and chilled water, domestic water, compressed air, HVAC systems and associated controls.
- Performing occasional supervision of external contractors in relation to mechanical fit out and maintenance or modification works.
- Participating in Health & Safety and Quality Assurance procedures as appropriate to the post.
- Carrying out and assisting with the preparation of safety risk assessments and method statements.
You will have ideally served a recognised apprenticeship in an engineering discipline or have equivalent experience. You will be a highly organised individual with good problem‑solving skills and the ability to work independently.
You will also require experience or knowledge within the following areas:
- Process cooling, chilled water and low temperature hot water systems
- Drainage/vacuum drainage systems
- Domestic water systems
- Familiarity with using Quality Control systems, Work planning and Safe Systems of Work.
- HSE legislation.

This position meets a SOC code that is on the UK Government’s Temporary Shortage List. This brings with it restrictions on our ability to sponsor non-UK & Irish nationals.
We can potentially sponsor those individuals that have already been sponsored in the UK since before 4th April 2024, as well as those individuals that meet the eligibility requirements of the new entrant rate, however, such employment could only be on a fixed term basis for the duration of your new entrant rate eligibility.
