Job title: Principal Radiation Protection Scientist

Location: Based on-site at our facility in Chilton, Didcot

Join UKHSA’s Radiation Dosimetry Department and play a leading role in protecting public health through research, advice and policy development on electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure.

As a senior scientist within the Electromagnetic Fields Dosimetry Group, you will lead research and advisory projects focused on EMF exposure, particularly radio frequency technologies such as mobile phones and telecommunications infrastructure. You will provide expert advice to government, industry, stakeholders and the public, contribute to national and international standards, publish scientific research, and support UKHSA’s emergency response activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and deliver research projects in experimental and numerical EMF dosimetry.
  • Provide expert scientific advice and contribute to UKHSA guidance and publications.
  • Produce scientific reports, peer-reviewed papers and technical reviews.
  • Represent UKHSA at national and international meetings, conferences and working groups.
  • Manage specialist laboratory equipment and numerical simulation platforms.
  • Support the Group Leader with team management, health and safety, audits and business development.
  • Respond to complex enquiries from government, industry, stakeholders and the public.
About You

You will bring:

  • A PhD (or equivalent experience) in EMF dosimetry, radiation physics, bioelectromagnetics or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in independent scientific research and project leadership.
  • Expertise in experimental EMF dosimetry, with a strong publication record.
  • Excellent scientific communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience presenting research at national and international conferences.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and data interpretation skills.
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel when required.
  • Expertise in numerical dosimetry and EMF simulation platforms.
  • Experience using specialist EMF measurement equipment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety, quality assurance and emergency response.
