Base Pay Range: $4,848.00 /yr – $4,848.00 /yr (anticipated starting salary $4,848; full range $4,651 – $6,217). This position is a union position under the RC006 Corrections Employees, AFSCME bargaining unit.

Title:

CORRECTIONAL OFFICER TRAINEE – 09676. Applicants must apply electronically via the Illinois Department of Corrections website:

Essential Functions
  • Receive eight weeks of formalized pre‑service security training at the Illinois Corrections Training Academy, including firearms training to meet qualification requirements.
  • Receive on‑the‑job training under immediate supervision of a qualified correctional employee.
  • Assist in running lines, yard, dining room, housing units, facility buildings, perimeter patrol, armory, counting, shakedowns, movement, and other duties as assigned.
  • Travel in a state‑issued vehicle to complete assignments.
  • Receive one week orientation at the facility.
  • Undergo formal training in housing‑unit work, report writing, out‑count work, yard work, and disciplinary procedures.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of the enumerated responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of four years of high school or equivalent.
  • Elementary knowledge of resident behavior problems.
Conditions of Employment
  • Completion of pre‑service security training during trainee period.
  • Successful completion of a firearms training course and proper use of firearms.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel statewide.
  • Eligibility to possess a firearm and maintain a valid Firearm Owner's Identification card.
  • Use of digital technology, tools, and platforms for departmental efficiency.
  • Pass background check and drug screen.
  • Comply with vaccine or other medical standards as set by the employer.
Work Hours

7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.; shift and days off will vary.
