Role OverviewThe purpose of the role of English Teacher is to promote a love for the subject in students of all abilities at the school. The teacher is responsible for planning, teaching and assessing the curriculum, supporting students to develop academic potential and raising standards of attainment. They are expected to model good relationships with students, colleagues and parents, and to contribute positively to the school and its extra‑curricular activities.
KeyDuties and Areas of Responsibility
- Has experience teaching English from Grades 6 to 8 (Years 7‑9).
- Has experience teaching English in the High School Diploma or IBDP from Grades 9 to 12 (Years 10‑13).
- Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils.
- Establish a safe and stimulating environment rooted in mutual respect.
- Set goals that stretch and challenge pupils of all backgrounds, abilities and dispositions.
- Demonstrate consistently the positive attitudes, values and behaviours expected of pupils.
- Be accountable for pupils’ attainment, progress and outcomes.
- Use prior knowledge and planning to build on pupils’ capabilities.
- Guide pupils to reflect on progress and emerging needs.
- Demonstrate knowledge of pupil learning and its impact on teaching.
- Encourage responsible and conscientious attitudes to study.
- Secure knowledge of the curriculum and foster pupil interest.
- Critically understand developments in the subject and promote scholarship values.
- Promote high standards of literacy, articulacy and correct standard English.
- Impart knowledge efficiently using lesson time.
- Promote a love of learning and intellectual curiosity.
- Set homework and additional out‑of‑class activities.
- Reflect on lesson effectiveness and teaching approaches.
- Contribute to curriculum design and department resources.
- Develop schemes of work and support materials.
- Differentiate appropriately for all pupils.
- Understand factors inhibiting learning and strategies to overcome them.
- Adapt teaching to support different developmental stages.
- Engage and support pupils with special educational needs, high ability, English as an additional language and disabilities.
- Assess subject areas and meet internal/external requirements.
- Use formative and summative assessment for progress.
- Analyse data to monitor progress and plan lessons.
- Provide regular oral and written feedback and encourage response.
- Apply clear rules and routines and promote good behaviour.
- Use praise, sanctions and rewards fairly.
- Manage classes effectively, motivating pupils appropriately.
- Maintain good relationships, exercise authority and act decisively.
- Contribute to school life and extra‑curricular programs.
- Develop professional relationships with colleagues.
- Deploy support staff effectively.
- Improve teaching through professional development.
- Assist in organising and running curriculum days.
- Communicate effectively with parents about progress and well‑being.
- Complete other reasonable tasks expected of a teacher.
- Adhere to Health and Safety procedures.
- Emphasise safety in all curriculum areas.
- Perform playground duties timely and with diligence.
- Take precautions to protect students, equipment and facilities.
- Assist in implementing policies governing student life and conduct.
- Ensure all health and safety rules are followed.
- Treat pupils with dignity and maintain professional boundaries.
- Safeguard pupils’ well‑being.
- Show tolerance and respect for the rights of others.
- Ensure personal beliefs are not misused or illegal.
- Maintain high attendance and punctuality.
- Bachelor’s Degree in teaching from an accredited institution.
- Required teaching certification for Qatar MOEHE.
- Meet professional teacher education requirements of the school.
