Job Description

This is an exciting time to be part of GEMS Wellington School – Qatar (WSQ). We are looking for an inspirational Primary Head of Maths who will work collaboratively with class teachers, phase leaders, secondary department heads and Senior Leadership Team. We seek a practitioner with genuine enthusiasm and expertise in Maths who can lead an engaging curriculum of excellence for all primary year groups.

In addition to carrying out the professional duties of a class teacher (on a reduced timetable), the Primary Head of Maths will be responsible for the leadership of an outstanding Primary Maths Curriculum across the school, ensuring all our children make excellent progress through key leadership actions. They will also model excellence in their day‑to‑day practice.

The successful candidate must demonstrate exceptional subject knowledge and a deep understanding of mathematical progression across all primary phases from Early Years to Year
6. They must be confident in how mathematical concepts develop over time and skilled in ensuring high‑quality teaching that builds secure fluency and deepens reasoning and problem‑solving. Their leadership should enable children to think flexibly, make rich connections and apply their understanding in increasingly sophisticated ways so they are consistently challenged and able to work at greater depth across the curriculum.

A strong command of primary mathematics, pedagogy and curriculum design is essential, along with the ability to coach and support staff to strengthen their own mathematical understanding and practice.

GEMS Wellington School, Qatar is one of the leading British curriculum schools in Qatar and part of the premium GEMS Wellington brand. We firmly believe, as a truly inclusive school, that every child can achieve. As a community, we have very high expectations for all with a clear emphasis on personal values, proactive attitudes and positive behaviours. We believe in excellence in all we do.

Skills
  • Be able to lead, motivate and inspire colleagues and children.
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide clear direction and support for their team, establish effective working routines and maintain a positive can‑do attitude.
  • Be a vocational and inspirational educator and leader who supports an inclusive learning environment with the ability to raise standards for all students.
  • Be knowledgeable and confident in the use of proven, effective teaching and learning methodologies.
  • Be fully committed to the belief that every child can achieve.
  • Have extremely high standards and expectations for all and be able to work effectively under pressure with excellence as the primary goal.
  • Be someone who is constantly looking to improve themselves further, able to think creatively and be open to new approaches.
  • Believe strongly in and fully support the wider extracurricular life of the school to develop fully rounded students.
  • Establish credibility with all staff and develop positive relationships with all stakeholders, including parents.

As a GEMS employee you can be guaranteed an excellent, well‑resourced professional environment, including working alongside highly driven, committed colleagues and fabulously polite and dedicated students. You will have access to significant further professional development opportunities at school level and as part of the wider GEMS Wellington cluster and GEMS network.

The post is to commence in August 2026.

Qualifications and Experience

Ideally, the successful candidate will have a minimum of three years’ teaching experience in a British Curriculum School and current experience in middle leadership, or be ready to take on their first leadership role. They must hold an appropriate teaching degree and Qualified Teacher Status. This role is not suitable for Early Career Teachers.

Application Process

To apply for this position, please complete the online application, submitting your full CV along with a Letter of Application outlining why you believe you have the skills, experience and attributes for the role whilst considering the following questions:

  • How have you contributed to the wider school community outside of the daily expectations of your current role? What impact has this had?
  • How have you developed and shared your expertise in Maths across the teaching team and what was the impact of this?

The Final date to receive applications is Friday 27th March 2026.

GEMS Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all of its students and staff. A UK‑enhanced DBS or equivalent police check is a pre‑requisite for all appointments.
