Position SummaryThe position is responsible for coordinating laboratory operations and instructional support activities such as laboratory preparation, practical instruction, and inventory management for the chemistry teaching lab.
Job Responsibilities- Prepares reagents and solutions, fabricates apparatus components, sets up equipment, and performs laboratory clean‑up.
- Supports with coordinating activities related to the “Proteins” module of the CAPSTONE:
Advanced Laboratory course. - Supports instructors in preparing reagents and setting up teaching laboratories as per sessions.
- Attends laboratory sessions to provide technical assistance, demonstrate established laboratory procedures, and reinforce proper laboratory techniques under the direction of the course instructor.
- Briefs users on laboratory procedures, equipment operation, the location and use of materials, and appropriate waste disposal and laboratory clean‑up practices as required.
- Performs routine cleaning, inspection, and organization of teaching laboratories, stockrooms, and equipment, including conducting inventory counts of chemicals, supplies, and equipment and supporting end‑of‑semester laboratory activities.
- Coordinates the ordering, receipt, embroidery, distribution, and annual dry‑cleaning of laboratory coats used in teaching laboratories.
- Assists with preparing purchase orders for laboratory supplies and equipment and liaises with Procurement and relevant vendors to support timely acquisition and delivery.
- Assists with recording keeping and coordinates with FHSS for proper disposal of hazardous chemical waste in accordance with policies.
- Assists with chemistry‑related student recruitment, community outreach, and other institutional activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in related field with 3 - 5 years research or teaching laboratory environment.
Previous training in laboratory safety is preferred.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of laboratory, equipment maintenance and stock management.
- Understands laboratory quality assurance and safe waste management disposal.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to multitask.
- Works independently or collaboratively within a team.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills with proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite of products Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
Ability to lift and carry 20 pounds unaided.
The work is approximately 30% computer and 70% laboratory-based.
Work may include using protective devices and clothing while handling chemical substances.
May require extended and varying work hours to meet demands.
