Engineering Manager, MAAS

Canonical is founder‑led, profitable and growing. We are hiring an Engineering Manager to expand our MAAS (Metal as a Service) team.
MAAS is a rapidly evolving software stack written in Python and Go that provides a cloud‑style on‑demand API for provisioning, network configuration and storage on physical servers. The MAAS team spans the entire stack from low‑level hardware detection to web interfaces, APIs and CLI tools.
We seek passionate technical leaders with deep familiarity in Linux on physical servers, Linux storage and data centre networking. You will be responsible for driving innovation in one of Canonical’s flagship data centre products and shaping the future of data centre technology at scale.
LocationThis is a work‑from‑anywhere position available in EMEA or the Americas.
Responsibilities- Lead a distributed team of engineers in your time zone (Americas, EMEA, etc.).
- Coach, mentor, give feedback and support career planning for talent development.
- Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholders.
- Advocate for and advance modern software development practices.
- Participate in the engineering process through code and architectural review.
- Engage with broader teams at Canonical, the open source community and partners.
- Travel to internal and external global events for 4 to 6 weeks per year.
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science.
- Exceptional academic record from high school through university.
- Proven experience delivering software using Python, Golang or similar languages.
- Experience with Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
- Familiarity with modern Linux cloud computing technologies, including networking, storage, containers and K8s.
- Strong technical aptitude for understanding complex distributed systems.
- Proficient written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
- Experience with agile software development methodologies.
- Ability to mentor, develop and support team members.
- Result‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
- Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks.
- Experience with Typescript and modern web frameworks such as React, Angular, Svelte or Vue.
- Knowledge of data centre infrastructure management and design.
