Locally Employed Clinical Research Fellow NHS Medical & Dental:
Senior Clinical Fellow Job overview

We are offering one research fellowship post in General Surgery (Breast or Gastrointestinal). This is a great opportunity for experienced surgical trainees to undertake research whilst developing their clinical skills.

The post will consist of 50% research and 50% clinical work, including half a slot on the 1 in 10 emergency on call rota. The General Surgical Unit comprises 14 GI Surgeons with specialist interests in Bariatric, Upper GI and Colorectal Surgery and 5 Breast Surgeons performing a full range of oncoplastic and reconstructive surgeries.

The GI and Breast Units have an excellent reputation for training, and this will be a great opportunity for the right candidate to further their career. The post holder would be expected to register for a doctoral degree (either an MD or PhD) with the University of Sheffield. Posts would be for two years (with an option to extend for a further year if candidates wish to undertake a PhD).

A range of projects are available across both Gastrointestinal Surgery and Breast Surgery. Projects may be clinical or laboratory based or a mixture of the two. The academic component of the research will be undertaken by Prof. Lynda Wyld.

Candidates will be expected to be at the level of ST3 or above and hold GMC registration.

Main duties of the job

The post will be based at Doncaster Royal Infirmary but may involve working on other sites occasionally. The post holder will take part in the on call rota at higher trainee (Resident) level, working half of a 1:11 on call slot, covering acute General Surgery and Vascular patients. There is a core trainee, FY1 and a consultant (both General Surgery and Vascular) on call at all times, with support from ANPs and SAS doctors for much of the time during working hours.
