This is an exciting development opportunity to pursue a career in Clinical Coding at the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In return we will provide comprehensive training to enable you to gain a good knowledge of medical conditions, become proficient in the application of National Clinical Coding Standards and Conventions and within 3 years attain a nationally recognised qualification and accreditation.

You should have proven ability to prioritise, plan and organise work daily, remain calm under pressure and work proactively within our team.

The Clinical Coding Team at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprises of a Clinical Coding Service Manager, an Assistant Clinical Coding Manager, 2 Clinical Coding Data Quality Systems Manager, 2 Team Leaders, 15 Clinical Coders.

The post will require operational working across all Trust sites.

The department supports flexible working.

Main duties of the job

Clinically coded data is fundamental in helping the Trust deliver against its overall goals The income of the Trust is reliant on accurate and timely coded data. This information is also has many other uses both locally and nationally.

The Team prides itself on providing excellent standards of training, mentoring and support for all team members.

  • The abstraction and analysis of patient clinical information and translating it into a standardised coded format applying National Clinical Coding Rules and Conventions.
  • Applying the process of decision-making, requiring the assimilation of complex facts and data from a variety of sources which are often inconsistent in content and location.
  • Participating in training courses in line with NHS Terminology and Classifications Service requirements.

At this Trust we have introduced an excellent career pathway for Trainee Clinical Coding Officers. On successful attainment of a proficiency certificate after the first year, you will progress to a Band 3 Clinical Coding Officer for a further 2 years until you have passed the National Clinical Coding Examination to become a Band 4 Accredited Clinical Coding Officer. One year later when you have acquired more clinical coding experience you will progress to a Band 5 Clinical Coding Advanced Practitioner.
