Job Summary

Are you looking for a new direction and to join a team supporting Children and Young People with Diabetes? We have an exciting opportunity to join our small, friendly children's diabetes team as a Healthcare Support Worker to complement our established multi-disciplinary team, working to support Children and Young People (CYP) 0-19 years with diabetes and their families.

Responsibilities
  • Support the team in providing care to ensure the standards of Best Practice Tariff are met.
  • Contribute to the smooth and effective running of the paediatric diabetes clinics.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with CYP and their families, promoting a consistent team approach to the management of diabetes.
  • Support the MDT in the efficient and smooth running of the Paediatric Diabetes Clinics.
  • Prepare for clinics; ensure all equipment is in good working order and ready for use; take any relevant educational material; set up ahead of clinic to ensure a prompt start.
  • Perform height, weight, BP and HbA1c blood test for each child attending clinic using Point of Care testing equipment.
  • Download blood glucose meters, sensor glucose meters and insulin pumps using the appropriate downloading platforms and software.
  • Be responsible for taking annual review bloods when they are due at patients' clinic appointments involving the play specialists if necessary.
  • Provide cover in the transition clinics if required.
Qualifications
  • Experience of working with Children and Young People or experience working within a care setting.
  • A confident approach to communication.
  • A willingness to gain a deeper understanding of managing diabetes and the effects of long term health conditions on CYP and their families.
  • Ability to undertake basic clinical procedures or a willingness to learn, under the guidance of the Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses (PDSN).
  • Willingness and ability to undertake training when in post.
  • Evidence of secondary education, demonstrating an understanding of literacy and numeracy.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • Experience of working with Children and Young People.
  • Understands the need for strict confidentiality.
  • Has an understanding of children's safeguarding.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • IT literate.
  • Competence or willingness to undertake venepuncture.
  • Flexible approach to work and ability to prioritise own workload.
  • Able to work under own initiative within boundaries of role.
  • Able to work as part of a team.
  • Values and respects everyone as an individual.
  • Motivated to be genuinely kind and caring.
  • Willing to learn and open to change.
  • Maintains a professional appearance, taking pride in the role and place of work.
  • Ability to make judgments involving a range of facts or situations.
  • Ability to travel across geographical locations as required.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a care setting.
  • NVQ Level 2 or 3.
  • Experience of working with Children and Young People with acute or chronic health needs.
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
