Staff Nurse - Lung Cancer Screening

Dorset County Hospital is recruiting a registered nurse to work with Dorset's Lung Cancer Screening Service, a programme that invites participants aged 55–74 who smoke or have smoked to undergo a lung health check. This role supports the set up and implementation of a pan‑Dorset Lung Cancer Screening Programme.

Main Duties of the JobThe main duties of the role include:
- Assess participants' eligibility and carry out the national risk assessment.
- Clearly explain the programme to patients in a way they can understand.
- Manage the participant list and maintain accurate records in Excel and Trust‑wide systems.
- Communicate with patients about appointments and procedural information, ensuring they understand preparation and the importance of early diagnostic appointments.
- Work closely with the Lung Cancer Screening team and nurses to ensure clinical queries are handled by the clinical team.
- Liaise with the responsible Radiologist, Consultants and Lead Nurse/Co‑ordinators to keep patients on the correct pathway for follow‑ups.
- Maintain and update personal data on patient tracker lists.
- Request CT scans appropriately.
- Refer relevant participants to the Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist team.
- Document findings and escalations appropriately.

Person Specification Education, Qualifications & Training- Registered Nurse / Nursing Degree.
- Evidence of relevant postgraduate study or equivalent knowledge.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
- Minimum 3 years at Band 5 in the relevant setting.
- Evidence of working independently.
- Experience in audit/patient surveys.
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary team.
- Awareness of relevant national and local targets / NSF Frameworks.
- Evidence of relevant CPD.
- Awareness of the Clinical Governance agenda.
- Evidence of decision making in clinical practice, care and programme management, clinical practice development and research participation.
- Analytical and judgemental skills.
- Planning – straightforward issues.
- Problem solving.
- Effective communication.
- Ability to work independently.
- Car owner/driver willing to travel within the remit of the service.
- Flexible to meet the needs of the post.
- Ability to work under pressure; manage stress.
