Main duties of the job

Redesigning pathways with our partners, working to build and grow our integrated care systems is all part of ensuring our patients get the best care - and that is the DCH way.

  • Access, plan, implement and evaluate individual patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Coordinate patient-centred care from admission to discharge.
  • Act as patients' advocate.
  • Promote the health and empowerment of patients.
  • To ensure that the patients' changing needs are identified and changes initiated or communicated to others.
  • An opportunity to work with multiple teams and clinical areas (appropriate to your qualification).

Job responsibilities Responsibility for Policy and Service Developments
  • Follow trust policies and procedures i.e. Risk reporting.
  • Contribute to the development of the ward/department by attending ward/department meetings and supporting the implementation of change.
  • Act as a resource link nurse for the ward.
  • Develop oneself and contribute to the development of others.
Responsibility for Financial and Physical Resources
  • May be required to handle patients' valuables and cash.
  • Ensure stock levels are maintained.
  • Manage resources within allocated budget; take appropriate action when this is challenged as a consequence of activity or staffing numbers.
Responsibility for Staff
  • Participate in the education and supervision of the ward team, including students.
  • Act as Team or Shift leader.
  • Act as a mentor to student nurses and unqualified staff, following appropriate training.
  • Supervise the ward team in the absence of the ward sister or senior nurse, to develop own managerial skills.
  • Accept the concept of clinical supervision.
Person Specification Education & Qualifications
  • NMC Registered Nurse or NMC Registered Sick Children's Nurse.
  • Evidence of Continued professional development.
Experience
  • Minimum of 1 year’s post registration experience in an acute setting.
  • Understanding of professional nursing issues.
Skills & Abilities
  • Evidence of ability to practice as a competent practitioner.
  • Evidence of ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, patients and visitors.
  • Evidence of an ability to manage time effectively.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and its requirements especially risk management.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality.
