Staff Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner - Day Surgery Unit

About the Unit

The Day Surgery Unit supports an expanding range of procedures across Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, including two theatres at Dorset County Hospital, the Eye Day Case unit (also at Dorset County Hospital), and a satellite unit at Weymouth Community Hospital.

Work rotates across all sites; you may also support other theatre areas as required.

The unit provides care for ENT, General/Breast Surgery, Gynaecology, Colorectal surgery, Orthopaedic surgery, Urology, Maxillo‑Facial surgery, Special Dentistry, and post‑operative care for day case pathway patients undergoing Ophthalmic surgery, ENT surgery, orthopaedic/trauma surgery, Gynae surgery, General surgery, and Interventional Radiology procedures.

Operational hours are Monday to Friday, 7 am to 8 pm.

Main Duties
  • Support staff nurses/ODPs across the Theatres Complex, including Main Theatres.
  • Assist in various procedures, including ENT, General/Breast, Gynaecology, Colorectal, Orthopaedic, Urology, Maxillo‑Facial, Special Dentistry, and day case pathway surgeries.
  • Provide post‑operative care for patients on the day‑case pathway.
  • Rotate across all sites and support additional theatre areas as required.
  • Maintain high standards of patient care and safety.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
  • Registered Practitioner.
  • Evidence of CPD.
  • Teaching course or qualification.
  • Significant recent experience as a staff nurse/ODP at Band 5 in the NHS.
  • Recent experience working in the NHS.
  • Understanding of professional nursing issues.
  • Ability to practice as a proficient practitioner.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, patients, and visitors.
  • Understanding of confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and its requirements.
  • Area of special interest in anaesthetics and orthopaedics.
  • Ability to develop leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of clinical audit.
  • Critical appraisal skills.
