Dorset is the managed service provider for Dorset Council, delivering high-quality temporary, contract, and interim staffing solutions. We pride ourselves on being an ethical, transparent, and people-focused organisation, committed to supporting both our clients and candidates.
We are seeking a Driver Supervisor to join Dorset Council's Transport Service based at the Old Radio Station Depot in Dorchester. This temporary position is due to commence in October and is offered on a 37-hour per week basis, working a shift pattern between 7:00am and 5:00pm, Monday to Friday. This is a key operational role responsible for supporting the day-to-day running of the transport fleet, supervising drivers across the county, and ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with Council policies and procedures.
Managing and supporting a team of approximately 65 home-to-school and adult day centre drivers, you will act as the main point of contact for operational queries, coordinate fleet and staffing resources, and provide front-of-house support at the depot. While primarily office and depot based, there may be occasional requirements to move vehicles or undertake driving duties where service needs require.
- Supervise and support drivers, ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of transport services.
- Act as the main point of contact for operational queries and coordinate driver and vehicle availability.
- Monitor compliance with transport policies, health & safety, and driving regulations.
- Maintain fleet records, process driver timesheets, and report vehicle defects.
- Coordinate responses to breakdowns, staffing issues, and service disruptions.
- Support driver inductions, training, and development.
- Build positive relationships with colleagues, contractors, and service users.
- Assist with depot operations and occasional driving duties when required.
- Experience supervising or coordinating teams, ideally within transport, logistics, or fleet operations.
- Strong organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing operational demands.
- Experience completing administrative tasks and maintaining accurate records.
- Knowledge of health & safety within an operational environment.
- Full UK driving licence (essential).
- D1 licence and minibus experience (desirable).
