Overview
Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant | Full-Time (32-40 hours/week) in Dothan, Alabama. This is a Full-Time (32-40 hours/week) SNF position in Dothan, AL.
Location:
Extendicare.
Summary:
The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA/L) will assist the Registered Occupational Therapist (OTR) in providing rehabilitation therapy to patients of all ages with temporary or chronic physical and psychosocial disability. Therapy includes activities of daily living, manual and creative skills, educational and recreational activities, facilitation techniques, developmental skills, and other techniques as applicable to the patient’s needs. Treatment aims to improve physical function and promote mental adjustment.
Upcoming or recent graduates from an Occupational Therapy Assistant Program are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities- Assist in planning therapy programs and, when delegated by the OTR, provide portions of patient treatments.
- Ensure patient safety while in the Occupational Therapy Department.
- Maintain organization and proper order of the Occupational Therapy treatment area.
- Transport patients to and from the department as needed.
- Maintain departmental and patient records as delegated and necessary.
- Monitor supplies used for physically disabled outpatients.
- Assist in preparing therapy treatments and setting up treatment areas.
- Bending, stooping, lifting patients and equipment; pushing wheelchairs and stretchers.
- Adjusting equipment to meet patient treatment needs; ability to work under pressure.
- Desire to work with people with temporary and/or chronic mental, physical, or developmental disabilities.
- Knowledge of medical terminology; experience with arts and crafts for therapy; good judgment; ability to organize activities and manage resources.
- Confidentiality and professional discretion in handling patient information.
The COTA has satisfactorily completed an Occupational Therapy curriculum approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association, is certified, and holds current certification with said professional organizations.

When educational requirements are met, no previous experience is necessary but would be desirable. - COVID vaccination is recommended for this position; an exemption will be entertained.
Under the direction of the Registered Occupational Therapist, the COTA provides treatment only on written or verbal procedures prescribed by a medical doctor or D.O.
- Assist in planning therapy programs for all patients.
- Evaluate response, measure change and development, and record data in collaboration with or under the supervision of the OTR.
- Prepare and fit splints for functional and non-functional upper and lower extremities as ordered; determine splinting and supply needs and report to the OTR.
- Assist in in-service education programs and prepare the patient treatment area for therapy sessions.
