Description:

The Cardiac Step-Down Unit provides specialized care for patients with cardiac conditions who no longer require intensive care but still need a higher level of monitoring and support than on a general medical-surgical unit. The unit serves patients transitioning out of the CCU and those recovering from procedures such as cardiac catheterization, pacemaker insertion, and ICD placement. The unit also manages stable cardiac patients requiring continuous telemetry monitoring and comprehensive cardiac care without CCU-level interventions.

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides patient-centered care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role coordinates and delivers high-quality care based on clinical protocols and physician/provider orders, collaborating with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure effective patient care and outcomes in a compassionate environment for patients and families.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinate and deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in accordance with organizational policies, protocols, and the nursing process.
  • Conduct thorough patient assessments and document findings accurately; report changes in condition to the care team.
  • Provide age-appropriate care and education using knowledge of human growth and development.
  • Administer prescribed medications, monitor for side effects, and document administration per standards of practice.
  • Assist physicians during procedures within the scope of documented competency and skill level.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans based on patient assessments and needs.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and participate in life-saving interventions (e.g., CPR, code team activities) as appropriate.
  • Advocate for patient rights and needs in care planning and delivery.
  • Provide patient and family education on medical conditions, treatment plans, and post-discharge care.
  • Implement and adhere to infection control protocols; monitor and maintain safety and cleanliness.
  • Monitor and operate medical equipment (e.g., IV pumps, monitors, ventilators) as needed for patient care and safety.
  • Promote patient safety by adhering to National Patient Safety Goals and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Participate in audits, chart reviews, and compliance checks to ensure adherence to standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate responsible decision-making in planning, delegating, and delivering care per policies.
  • Document patient care and education thoroughly and promptly in the medical record.
  • Engage in professional development to maintain clinical competency and awareness of current nursing standards.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives, including data collection and process development, to enhance outcomes.
Specialty Areas (examples within the unit)
  • Critical Care RN: administer medications and treatments, manage complex equipment, and perform high-level procedures as competency allows.
  • Emergency Services RN: rapid assessment and triage, emergency procedures, stabilization, and post-stabilization care.
  • OR Services RN: perioperative care, scrubbing, instrument handling, and monitoring.
  • Cardiac Surgery RN: post-operative monitoring, chest tube and wound care, and IV/drip management.
  • Endoscopy RN: procedure preparation and post-procedure care.
  • Obstetrics/Labor and Delivery/Postpartum/Nursery RN: prenatal care, labor support, postpartum and newborn care.
  • Oncology RN, Orthopedics RN, PACU RN, NICU RN, Telemetry RN, Dialysis RN, Cath Lab RN: various roles as foundational to the unit’s multidisciplinary care.
Qualifications
  • 0-2 years of experience in a clinical nursing role or student clinical rotations in an acute care setting required.
Knowledge,

Skills And Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of the nursing process and clinical nursing practices.
  • Ability to perform thorough patient assessments and communicate findings effectively.
  • Proficient in administering medications and monitoring for side effects.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documenting patient care.
  • Knowledge of safety standards, infection control, and quality improvement initiatives.
Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse state licensure and/or compact state licensure required
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support required
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support preferred
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support preferred
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation preferred
