About Us

South Georgia State College (SGSC) is a residential state college of the University System of Georgia (USG). SGSC focuses on strong teaching and personalized academic advising and offers associate and selected bachelor’s degree programs. The campus is located at 100 West College Park Drive, Douglas, GA 31533.

Department Information
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License and safe driving record.
  • Pass criminal history check, background investigation, drug screening, and credit check.
  • Pass medical, physical fitness, psychological, and voice stress/polygraph examinations.
  • Must possess analytical decision‑making skills and interpersonal skills for a diverse public.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and any weather conditions; available on short notice for emergencies.
Job Summary

Campus police patrol the college grounds, enforcing Georgia laws, city ordinances, and college rules. They protect life and property, identify security hazards, control traffic and parking, and conduct or supervise investigations of crimes and incidents.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol campus and jurisdictional boundaries by vehicle, golf cart, or on foot to deter and enforce violations.
  • Respond to calls for protection of life and property, law enforcement, service, and complaints.
  • Provide security checks of campus buildings and vehicles.
  • Conduct investigations into criminal, non‑criminal, and traffic violations, gather evidence, and interview relevant parties.
  • Meet training and educational requirements to meet POST and departmental standards.
  • Serve as liaison and public relations officer for the campus community and the public.
  • Enforce college policies and regulations, adhering to departmental, SGSC, and USG policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma/GED with related work experience.
  • Certification from the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia or completion of such certification by the end of the probationary period.
  • Proposed salary commensurate with certification.
Abilities, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA)

Knowledge

  • Standard police practices and techniques, federal and state laws, college regulations, and department policies.
  • Organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Basic CPR, First Aid, and AED operation.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with diverse constituencies.
  • Effective radio communication over law enforcement channels; knowledge of terminology, codes, and abbreviations.
  • Ability to comprehend documents, including citations, affidavits, and warrants.
  • Independent judgment in force use, probable cause, and reasonable suspicion.
