Port Health Team Leader

Salary of £57,044 plus a car allowance of £7,819 and a 14% shift allowance.

We are seeking experienced Team Leaders with port health, environmental health or veterinary experience to lead a multidisciplinary team of port health colleagues and ensure effective delivery and implementation of biosecurity and imported food control checks at Dover and Coquelles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage day‑to‑day operations of port health activities.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team to deliver and implement biosecurity and food control checks.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to the team, ensuring compliance with current legislation.
  • Make enforcement action decisions and lead on enforcement matters.
  • Support the implementation of health, safety and risk management procedures.
Qualifications and Experience
  • BSc or MSc in Environmental Health or Veterinary Medicine.
  • Minimum of 3 years post‑qualification experience in port health, food safety, public health or related field.
  • Demonstrable technical knowledge of port health, food safety and public health legislation.
  • Extensive experience in managing people and strong communication skills.
Working Conditions

The role involves work in confined spaces, around moving vehicles, walk‑freezers and occasional work ks often require prolonged standing, outdoor work in all weathers and frequent use of personal protective equipment such as high‑visibility clothing, safety boots, hard hats and hearing protection. It is emotionally demanding with high‑pressure decision making.

Shift pattern is flexible, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. Experience of shift work is advantageous. The role requires presence at the Port of Dover, Coquelles and Dover District Council offices.

Additional Requirements
  • Strong IT skills, experience of IPAFFS and PHILIS is an advantage.
  • Must have a current full driving licence and use a private vehicle for business purposes.
  • Physical fitness required; occupational health clearance will be mandatory.
