General SummaryThe Medical Laboratory Technician, under the general supervision of a Supervisor, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist or Charge Tech, is responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results. The Technician’s responsibilities may include receiving specimens, verifying proper patient identification, and verifying specimen acceptability, and performing all laboratory procedures with accuracy and reliability in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Responsibilities- Demonstrate technical knowledge, competence, and skill in performing applicable laboratory procedures and reporting test results in accordance with departmental policies, regulatory standards, and turnaround time goals; prioritize work to maintain accuracy.
- Follow through on all tests, procedures, or tasks left from the previous shift, report incomplete assignments, and communicate necessary information to ensure continuity of service. Call all critical/significant values as soon as available and document action per protocol.
- Consult with lead tech, supervisor, or pathologist before releasing test results when findings are inconsistent with the clinical picture or when unresolved difficulties arise; investigate and communicate all unusual or unexpected results.
- Perform and evaluate all required quality control and maintenance procedures, document results, implement corrective action, and demonstrate effective problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills. Recognize deviations and investigate unusual results.
- Embrace a culture of safety by following Infection Control/Safety protocols, maintaining cleanliness of work area and equipment, and helping to keep the work/storage areas organized.
- Show fiscal responsibility by using supplies appropriately, replacing used supplies to maintain sufficient stock, and properly disposing of waste.
- Perform all other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
- Education:
Associate Degree in Medical Lab Sciences or Associate in Science in medical laboratory technology, 52‑week military training certificate, or Senior Bachelor of Science student in Medical Technology with completed on‑campus courses and current clinical laboratory rotations. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, or biological science, or other qualifications meeting CLIA requirements for High Complexity Testing Personnel. - Credential(s):
