General SummaryThe Histotechnologist prepares slides for histologic and cytologic diagnosis utilizing paraffin, frozen section, microtomy, cytospin, and other appropriate techniques. Prepares and performs routine and special stains and histochemical procedures. Performs data entry and maintains records such as accession logs, workload, and quality control. Maintains slide and block files, matches slides and reports, troubleshoots and resolves inquiries and problems. The Histotechnician may assist the Pathologist with autopsies and by performing gross descriptions on specific surgical specimens.
Under the general supervision of a Section Supervisor and/or Pathologist, the Histology Technician performs all histology procedures in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- Performs and documents all tasks and procedures in compliance with all personal and section accreditation standards from JC and state/federal licensure while maintaining accuracy in all job functions. Identifies, investigates, determines and implements necessary corrective action, and communicates appropriately all unusual/unexpected results or situations. Consults appropriate personnel regarding all difficulties, technical questions or unresolved problems.
- Performs all tasks, procedures, and documentation within laboratory standards for timeliness without reminder. Follows through on all tests, procedures, assignments, or tasks left from the previous shift, and reports any incomplete assignments to ensure work is completed without interruption of service.
- Demonstrates financial responsibility by utilizing supplies appropriately to avoid wastage. Replaces all supplies used during the shift to assure volumes are sufficient for the following shift. Recognizes low inventory situations and alerts appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Inventories and/or orders section supplies to ensure adequate stock is available as assigned by or in the absence of the supervisor.
- Assists coworkers at all times with any difficult procedures/problems, including heavy workload. Provides instruction on new methods and instrumentation. Trains new employees and students. Documents all instruction completed on assigned employees’ training outlines accurately and completely before the end of the shift.

Route 2:
High School Diploma or GED Certificate Program Histotechnology; at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), AND one year full‑time acceptable experience in a histopathology (clinical, veterinary, industry or research) laboratory in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory within the last ten years.
