General SummaryThe hospital-based Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) works as a member of the care team with OB/GYN physicians to provide specialty healthcare for women in the hospital setting. Clinical responsibilities include evaluation and management of obstetrical and common pregnancy‑associated conditions, focused on intrapartum and immediate postpartum phases, with possible involvement in antepartum complications.
Responsibilities- Collaborates and consults with Bayhealth physicians according to practice guidelines and nurse‑midwifery regulations.
- Initial evaluation of L&D patients, monitors labor, advises on health practices, performs tests, and reports complications.
- Prepares patients and partners for delivery; trains mothers-to-be in exercise, breathing, and relaxation techniques.
- Attends and reassures patients throughout labor, monitors fetal status, administers medications, and notifies physicians of prolonged labor or complications.
- Delivers infants and checks mother and child for normal response.
- Visits mother and child during postpartum to give feeding and newborn‑care instructions.
- Provides family‑planning advice and performs gynecological services.
- Participates in performance‑improvement activities and continuing education, obtaining the CEU’s necessary to maintain licensure and prescriptive authority.
- Adapts to changing demands of the workplace and contributes to the professional development of peers and other healthcare providers.
- Assesses need for referral to other providers and participates in labor and delivery coverage.
- Performs all other duties and special projects within scope.
- Master’s degree in Midwifery; graduate of a nurse‑midwifery program with certification.
- Credential(s):
Midwife Practitioner, Certified Midwife, or equivalent board certification. - Experience:
No prior experience required; new graduates welcome.
- Basic Life Support (BLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
- Three (3) years of experience as a Midwife in a hospital setting.
