Overview
The Planning Director is seeking an individual to perform a variety of routine and complex technical work associated with the inspection and enforcement of established health, fire, and life safety related ordinances, codes and standards. The principal function of this employee is to enforce city and state health and fire codes and ordinances.
Salary: $30.34 to $43.94 per hour (40 hrs/week). Full-time, non-exempt position with full-time benefit offerings. Position is open until filled.
Duties and Responsibilities- Perform visual on-site inspections of private, public and commercial property to ensure compliance with health related ordinances, codes and standards and other related codes such as Fire, Life Safety, and Building codes.
- Work to reduce the risk of health and safety concerns, maintaining protection of life and property from hazards created by disease, illness, fire, explosion, and hazardous materials.
- Interpret and apply laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and policies related to health related inspection and enforcement duties, including fire, life safety, building codes, or city codes.
- Identify the need for permits, issue health related licenses and permits as required by local ordinance or state law.
- Issue stop work orders, correction notices and citations as required by applicable health related ordinances, codes and standards.
- Conduct plan reviews, issue and close out city permits as required by local ordinance or state law.
- Prepare and maintain records, photographs, and other materials required by City ordinance or state law.
- Research and investigate code compliance complaints and health related nuisances, recommend abatement proceedings when appropriate.
- Attend meetings, provide guidance regarding inspection standards and procedures to stakeholders in the health care and food service industries.
- Coordinate activities with other employees, departments or agencies, maintaining effective working relationships.
- Operate personal or assigned motor vehicle to travel throughout the city in completing field work.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Thorough knowledge of state and local health related laws, fire and life safety related laws, codes, ordinances, and standards.
- Working knowledge of general building construction, materials, practices, and codes.
- Awareness of public health issues, communicable diseases, and sanitary hazards.
- Familiarity with New Hampshire State health laws and standards.
- Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, techniques and practices used in environmental health inspection and compliance activities.
- Ability to perform routine and complex inspections of food preparation operations and environmental sampling related to public health inspections.
- Ability to read and interpret code requirements.
- Effective oral and written communication skills for conveying complex information.
- General computer skills including word-processing, spreadsheets, permitting software, and databases.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, agencies, and the public.
- Minimum High School diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred:
Two-year college degree with coursework in environmental health, public health, biology or a closely related field. - Alternative:
Equivalent combination of education and experience such as building and/or fire and life safety certifications, inspection or installation experience. - Prefer Food Safety Manager and/or Food Safety Professional certification and training as sanitarian.
- Valid passenger motor vehicle operator license required.
- Applicant expected to obtain a Food Serv Safe certification within first 6 months of employment.
