Press Operator II Gannett Publishing Services

The Rockaway Facility is looking for a full‑time Press Operator to assist with daily production on our double wide presses. Under the direction of press management & supervisors—the Press Operator II is assigned to perform printing related tasks that may include, but are not limited to: working as Primary Ink setting or Folder operator, oversight of plate processing; spotting plates; reel set‑up & operation;

newsprint staging; roll preparation; CMYK ink setting; advanced press operational controls; equipment maintenance; and specified reporting.

Every member of the pressroom staff constantly strives to achieve the following goals, and the contribution of every press operator is necessary for success. The primary objective is to support efficient press operations as needed to achieve & maintain on‑time production, product quality standards, low waste, and operational safety.

  • Optimum quality of printed products.
  • Observance of all scheduled start and stop times.
  • Conservation of material resources, especially newsprint.
  • A clean and safe working environment.
Requirements

Candidate must be proficient in Mitsubishi, Wifag or similar newspaper press operations and functions. Must have knowledge of printing techniques, understanding basic ink/water balance, and press quality standards. Read and layout press diagrams accurately to accommodate color demand while maintaining maximum labor and waste efficiencies. Must understand how to layout press runs, install leads, and switch angle bars. Must be proficient in all reel room operations and procedures.

Must understand all reel functions including tensioning system, roll delivery systems, roll/butt diameter. Candidates should have the ability to adapt to change, prioritize work, handle multiple tasks, remain flexible and interact with people while demonstrating patience. Must be able to work in a fast‑paced environment and meet all deadlines. Forklift and clamp truck certification a plus. Must have solid organizational and computer skills including good working knowledge of general business and Microsoft software programs.

This position is Full‑time shift work, which may include scheduled nights, weekends, and holidays.

You must be able to lift/carry up to 75 pounds. Must be able to push/pull up to 2000 pounds. A press operator II spends most working hours on his/her feet. In addition to extended periods of standing, a press operator is required to climb stairs on the six‑level press structure. Operators engaged in press maintenance and some cleaning activities will be required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.

They often work in confined areas. Color vision is required.
