Major Responsibilities- Interprets physician referrals and conducts a speech and language evaluation of patients with various speech, language, voice, cognitive, and swallowing disorders.
- Establishes a written plan of care and implements individual treatment based on evaluation results, functional goals, and appropriate techniques. Monitors and evaluates outcomes, adjusting the plan as needed, and provides status updates to physicians and teammates.
- Identifies factors affecting the patient’s physical and psychosocial comfort and attends to these needs.
- Plans for and completes patient discharge, providing written home programs, patient/family teaching, community service referrals, transition planning, and equipment ordering as indicated.
- Communicates and collaborates with stakeholders to achieve optimum care for the patient.
- Completes all required documentation per department policy and accreditation standards, including evaluations, progress notes, conference reports, and discharge summaries. Records patient care, completes daily statistics, billing, and scheduling. Applies insurance guidelines and maintains productivity standards.
- Maintains a clean and orderly treatment area, performs manual techniques, patient positioning, and transport duties requiring safe lifting.
- Demonstrates skill with modalities, exercise equipment, and devices as per orientation checklist, and understands their indications and contraindications.
- Promotes patient safety by following safety initiatives and infection control measures.
- Participates in performance improvement activities to resolve patient care issues and improve quality. Manages caseload and informs leadership of coverage needs.
- Pursues professional growth through continuing education, in‑services, and literature review.
- Orients new staff to clinical and departmental policies.
- Participates in coworker evaluation by providing verbal or written feedback.
- May supervise non‑licensed personnel, delegating care while maintaining responsibility for patient plans and goals. Supports the student clinical education program with at least one student per year when available.
Job Requirements Education
Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited school or educational requirements commensurate with the date of graduation; maintains continuing education requirements as mandated by applicable state professional standards.
Certification / Registration / LicenseLicensed Speech‑Language Pathologist in the State of employment. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (obtained within 90 days unless required otherwise). Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech‑Language Hearing Association (ASHA) or Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) eligible.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities- Intermediate computer skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

- Successfully completes all competency assessments/requirements pertaining to patient care and site standards.
- Maintains annual educational requirements for hospital‑based certifications (e.g., DNV, CARF).
- Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development across the lifespan and can assess data to identify age‑specific patient needs.
- Physical ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, and squat throughout the workday.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
- Must lift up to 10 lbs. from waist to overhead.
- Must lift and carry up to 40 lbs. at waist height over a reasonable distance.
- Must push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
- Must perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
- Repetitive use of hands: simple grasping 5‑15 lbs. (20% of the workday), pushing/pulling up to 75‑100 lbs. (10% of the day), fine manipulation during therapy.
- Functional use of senses for effective communication.
- Possibility of exposure to electrical and chemical hazards, blood, and body fluids; ability to wear protective clothing.
