Reporting to the Lead Stationary Engineer, the Building Mechanic performs routine and extensive preventive maintenance and repair procedures on buildings, mechanical equipment, and utility systems during the 2nd shift (Tuesday–Saturday, 3 pm–11:30 pm). Apply online to join Midwestern University.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform minor and major repairs of all buildings and equipment (major repairs supervised by a licensed engineer).
- Perform preventive maintenance procedures on building mechanical equipment on a scheduled basis; inspect belts, check fluid levels, replace filters, grease bearings, seal components; repair or replace broken parts.
- Complete daily, weekly, and monthly checklists on building equipment maintenance procedures and maintain records of scheduled maintenance.
- Participate in developing and implementing mechanical maintenance plans to prevent costly equipment breakdowns.
- Cleans and inspects boiler; treats water with proper chemicals.
- Operate a computer that controls and monitors mechanical equipment and utility systems.
- Repair refrigeration equipment.
- Assemble and install valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, as well as non‑metals such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic.
- Install and repair plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
- Repair and maintain plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains.
- Monitor building temperatures and adjust as necessary.
- Respond to emergency maintenance requests as required.
- Execute other duties as assigned.

Education and/or ExperienceHigh School diploma or GED required. EPA Universal Certification license strongly desired. A certification from a technical school or Associate’s degree in a related field desired. 1–2 years of related experience with HVAC equipment required. Valid driver’s license required.
Computer SkillsProficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) desired.
Language SkillsIntermediate:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
Intermediate:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Will regularly stand, walk, use hands, reach with arms, talk, and hear. Frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; climb or balance. Occasionally sit. Must regularly lift or move up to 25 pounds, frequently up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Requires close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color vision.
Work EnvironmentExposure to moving mechanical parts, wet/humid conditions, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and outdoor weather. Noise level moderately loud.
