Building Mechanic – IL – Campus Facilities – 2nd Shift – Sun–Thurs 3pm–11:30pm Summary
The Building Mechanic performs routine and extensive preventative maintenance and repair procedures on buildings, mechanical equipment and utility systems. This position reports to the Lead Stationary Engineer. The hours for the position are Sunday‑Thursday from 3 pm to 11:30 pm.
Responsibilities- Perform minor and major repairs on all buildings and equipment (major repairs under supervision of licensed engineer).
- Perform preventive maintenance on building mechanical equipment: inspect belts, check fluid levels, replace filters, grease bearings and seals, and repair or replace broken parts.
- Complete daily, weekly and monthly checklists on building equipment maintenance procedures and maintain records.
- Participate in developing and implementing mechanical maintenance plans to prevent costly equipment breakdowns.
- Clean and inspect boiler; treat water with proper chemicals.
- Operate computer systems that control and monitor mechanical equipment and utility systems.
- Assemble and install valves and pipe fittings of metal and non‑metal materials.
- Install and repair plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers and water softeners.
- Repair and maintain plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and clearing clogged drains.
- Monitor building temperatures and adjust as necessary.
- Respond to emergency maintenance requests as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or GED required; EPA Universal Certification license strongly desired.
- Associates degree or technical school certification in a related field desired.
- 1–2 years of related experience with HVAC equipment.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) desired.
- Knowledge of safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Strong reasoning ability: apply common sense to solve problems involving multiple variables.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, use hands, reach, lift up to 100 lb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or climb.
The job requires repeated standing, walking; lifting up to 25 lb regularly and up to 50 lb frequently. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, wet and humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, electrical shock risk, and outdoor weather. Noise level moderately loud.
